Legacy Series

"EHE Legacies Honoring our Community of Excellence" banner

An EHE Legacy is a current or former EHE faculty, staff, or student whose contributions to the college and society are worthy of recognition. Since 1895, the College of Education and Human Ecology has played an important role in education at all levels and human development across the lifespan at The Ohio State University, the United States and around the world. The EHE Legacies project started in Fall 2019 and was created to explore the rich legacies of people, experiences, and accomplishments that have helped shape the College of Education and Human Ecology. We believe that a legacy starts with the knowledge and appreciation of the contributions of those who came before, which establishes a strong foundation upon which to build and progress.

Special Legacies Spotlight

In honor of our collaborative partnership with local school districts, we have dedicated a Special Legacies spotlight for two Columbus City School teachers and a student from Berwick Alternative K-8. We had the privilege of working with Berwick Alternative K-8 on the 2023 Experience EHE Art Exhibit which featured artwork and poems inspired by the book “The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read” by Rita Lorraine Hubbard; illustrated by Oge Mora.

On May 10, 1930, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) was founded at Howard University in Washington, DC. by the five founding chartering organizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (January 15, 1908), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.(January 13, 1913), Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (January 16, 1920), Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (January 5, 1911), and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.(November 17, 1911).

Later, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.(December 4, 1906), and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.(January 9, 1914) joined NPHC in 1931, followed by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.( November 12, 1922) in 1937. The last and ninth organization, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. (September 19, 1963), joined NPHC in 1997, which solidified the Divine Nine (D9).
