EHE Legacies: Mental Health Awareness

Dr. Sean Gorby

Dr. Sean Gorby is an assistant professor in Counselor Education at Capital University. Dr. Gorby is also a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the state of Ohio where, since 2014, he has worked in in both college counseling centers and private practices. In 2018, Sean opened his own private practice, Renaissance Counseling and Consultation, in Lancaster Ohio where he diagnosis and treats mental and emotional disorders across the lifespan with innovative practices to provide high quality services with equitable access for all. Sean also provides counseling for couples and families, provides consultation services for various organizations, and conducts quarterly marriage seminars and parenting workshops free to those who attend. Sean is involved in leadership with the Ohio Counseling Association (OCA) where, Since 2016, he has served as the chair person for the OCA’s Government Relations Committee. Sean also serves as the treasurer for the Ohio Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. He has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on topics such as Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in Counselor Education, cognitive complexity and heart rate variability, policy and legislative advocacy, wellness, and counseling older adults. Sean’s research agenda explores the following: cognitive complexity and heart rate variability; legislative advocacy, policy, and counseling licensure laws; wellness; mental health stigma and person first language, and counseling older adults. Sean graduated with his undergraduate degrees in psychology, bible, and theology from Malone University, his master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Ohio University, and his doctorate degree in Counselor Education from The Ohio State University.
