I am currently in the era of little kid motherhood, and with that has come a new appreciation for animal facts. My children are constantly requesting something like, “can you search on your phone where to find salamanders in Ohio?” One of my long-time favorite animals is the bird. I appreciate birds for their ability to go far distances, alone or in a group, and return home when the time is right. Birds seem to understand the vast beauty in the world, the potential for exploration, and the value therein.
Many of the faculty, staff, and students of EHE must share this understanding. International partnership activities and Global Education programs are in a consistent state of full swing. As a college, we welcome dozens of international visitors each semester, send hundreds of students across the globe, and conduct and share research with colleagues from an array of national backgrounds and locations. Birds may have us beat on the gift of flight, but we know that there is more to going far than seeing cool things. Interacting with and learning from our globally diverse neighbors is intellectually stimulating, culturally enriching, and professionally gratifying.
Despite the high level of global engagement in EHE, there is room for immense growth. We hope that you will continue to partner in our efforts to expand cross-cultural competence of our students, faculty, and staff.

Global Hub Reception
On November 2nd, 2022 faculty and staff from across the college came together for an afternoon of learning and networking to celebrate the collective, ongoing work EHE does around the world. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, international partnerships and Global Education programs have remained a priority and engagement continued through virtual channels and limited in-person travel. We are pleased to share that our global reach in the 2021 – 2022 school year included more than 20 countries around the world through our partnerships and programs. The EDGE Office would like to thank the many faculty and staff who have continued this important work throughout the pandemic.
EHE Hosts International Delegations
- Dr. Peter Paul hosted visiting scholar Dr. Tsuneo from the University of Tsukuba from February to March. During his visit, EHE and University of Tsukuba co-hosted the International Virtual Mini-Conference.
- In March, Dr. Hisae Miyauchi and a graduate student visited to build on ongoing research and teaching collaborations with EHE faculty and staff.
- During her visit to Ohio State, Dr. Keiko Ikeda of Kansai University (Japan) invited several colleges, including EHE, to participate in a multi-institution, grant funded partnership opportunity. Several EHE faculty and staff have joined the application to offer hybrid-mobility COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) courses to EHE and international students.
- Dr. Caroline Benton of University of Tsukuba (Japan) presented an opportunity for collaboration with EHE scholars. Several EHE faculty and staff expressed interest and are working on a grant application for joint online courses and mobility programs.
- The Congressional Office for International Leadership (COIL) brought a delegation of 18 Romanian educators to the United States to learn more about English as a Second Language (ESL) pedagogy and best practices. - Dr. Bert Tuga, the President of Philippine Normal University in Manila, Philippines met with Dean Don Pope Davis and Drs. Binaya Subedi and Adrian Rodgers to explore partnership opportunities.

Interview with Kaira Mack
The third week of November celebrates International Education Week (IEW), a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to celebrate and promote a broader understanding of world cultures. To commemorate IEW, Neal McKinney, interviewed student Kaira Mack to share her experiences on participating in multiple EHE global education programs and the value of international education.
Partnership Spotlight: EHE BuckLER Center
The BuckLer Center was established by Drs. Ivan Stefano, Francis Troyan, and Pete Sayer. The center focuses on multilingual language education and language teacher development. It is affiliated with the Multilingual Language Education (MLE) and Intercultural English Language Programs (IELP) in the Department of Teaching and Learning within the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University.
TESOL Training Program for the Guangdong Teachers’ Association
The Buckeye Language Education Resource (BuckLER) Center in the Department of Teaching and Learning led a professional development series for Language Teachers in the Guangdong (China) Teachers’ Association during the Autumn 2022. Twenty-five teachers from a range of levels of instruction participated in the series, which focused on core practices in language teaching. The content of the series included sessions on Second Language Acquisition, Language Assessment, TESOL Methods, Teaching Culture, as well as the American Higher Education System. This series was part of an on-going professional development partnership with the Guangdong Teachers’ Association.

Global One Health Leadership Delegation
EHE partnered with the Global One Health Initiative to host twenty-five Ethiopian higher education leaders in October 2022. The experience was part of the Leadership, Management, and Governance (LMG) project implemented in Ethiopia by three U.S. universities: Texas Tech University, Oklahoma State University and The Ohio State University, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy, Addis Ababa and the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Education.
International Virtual Mini-Conference with University of Tsukuba
For the second year in a row, EHE co-hosted a virtual conference with University of Tsukuba. This year, the focus was on Inclusive Education and Literacy and d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. Fourteen faculty and staff from eight institutions in Japan and the United States offered presentations, and more than 100 attendees participated.
Global Education
As the pandemic has gradually subsided and travel restrictions lifted, resuming study abroad programs presented exciting opportunities for many of our faculty and students. Our groups have once again embarked on academic journeys around the world, fostering cross-cultural understanding and personal growth. We are excited to share the experiences of the five EHE programs that travelled in the 2022 – 2023 academic year!

Sustainability and Social Justice in Ecuador
Resident Directors: Marc Guerrero, Monica Quezada Barrera
Number of Participants: 16
Description: This program explores the intersection of themes such as sustainability, food security, Indigenous rights, and women’s rights as they relate to social justice in a global context, and also focuses on comparative understandings of educational access and equity. After a quick stop in Quito to visit the Equator and historical center, the main portion of the program takes place in Cuenca in partnership with the University of Cuenca. This program also partners with local community organizations such as the Women’s Association of Freedom and Progress in the rural community of Gullanzhapa to learn about and support the sustainability of their natural products made from regional plants.
This was an amazing opportunity to be fully immersed in the culture of Ecuador. Through getting a glimpse into several indigenous communities and staying with Ecuadorian families in Cuenca, I think this program really allows for a new perspective and a greater understanding of Ecuador as a country.”Student Quote

Hospitality, Tourism, and Gastronomy in Paris

Description: This program explores the heart of hospitality in Europe’s top tourist destination. Participants gain insight into various segments of hospitality (culinary arts, food production and service, tourist attractions) through hands-on and behind-the-scenes access to sites including the Eiffel Tower, the Lenôtre Culinary Arts School, Bateaux Parisien, La Seine Musicale and L’Hotel des Arts et Metiers.

Multicultural Histories and Legacies of the United Kingdom

Description: This program provides the opportunity to understand what social change is and how it relates to how communities live, learn, and engage with each other. Students examine the concept of social change in domestic and global contexts at the Ohio State Columbus campus during Spring semester and travel abroad to the United Kingdom during Spring Break. The European Model of Sport

Description: This program that takes students on a seminar through Europe, providing a unique, firsthand experience in international sports. The course is designed to introduce students to the European model of sport management, marketing and sports law and to provide students with an understanding of the changing context for sport in a global society.
