Speaker 1:
Hello everyone. I’m Dr. Peter Paul, professor of Special Education at The Ohio State University. I am humbled and honored to receive the King Salman International Award for Disability Research.
I want to thank His Royal Highness Prince Sultan bin Salman, and his father, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz.
With more than 270 publications, my major research thrusts have focused on the development of language, literacy, and literate thought for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.
I have also collaborated with colleagues to produce scholarly works in the area of inclusion and for those involving children who are deaf with additional disabilities and those who are blind or visually impaired, and those who are English language learners.
I am the father of an adult hearing son Peter Ben, who has Down syndrome and autism, and I am a person with a bilateral profound hearing loss who has benefitted from cochlear implants.
These personal conditions have contributed to my identity and have influenced my professional career.
Grounded in the scientific approach, my body of work reflects a reciprocal relation between theory and research, providing recommendations for improvement, language and literacy, and also all for promoting inclusive educational practices. My theoretical and research works have resulted in the development of educational and curricular materials, including multimedia materials involving vocabulary and reading.
For deaf and hard of hearing students.
I have also been involved with the development of literacy materials used by other students with disabilities and by English language learners.
I have had the opportunity to teach, work and publish with doctoral students and colleagues all over the world. These cross cultural collaborations have continued to fuel my scholarship, passion and advocacy for improving the educational and social welfare of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing as well of those individuals with other disabilities. Thank you.
