“My work focuses on equity and inclusion within higher education and the greater community. Systemic oppression has limited the viability of African-American/Black students in educational settings, and much of my work centers on not only identifying those barriers but also includes solution-focused strategies for success. Specific to my discipline, I seek to advance the counseling field by creating pathways to success for future African American/Black counselors and counselor educators. By increasing the number of qualified African American/Black counselors, the aim is to cultivate culturally responsive spaces that reflect the experiences of minorities in theoretical orientation, technique, and overall clinical practice to increase service utilization. Additionally, my work on addictions is aimed at improving outcomes for African Americans/Blacks whose stories are often white-washed and criminalized due to a lack of equitable conditions due to discriminatory policies and practices.”
