Hi my name is liz laborn and i’m the asl
and spoken language specialist at lowell general hospital
between march 13th and april 15th the
united states celebrates deaf history month
i am so proud that lowell general
hospital is joining in with many other
institutes across the united states
to celebrate deaf history month which
recognizes the many accomplishments
of many deaf and hard of hearing people
there are three events that are
highlighted for deaf history month
the first one took place on april 15th of 1817
the founding of the first school for the
deaf in the united states
the american school for the deaf in
hartford connecticut
the second event took place on april 8th
of 1864 the founding of gallaudet
university in washington dc
this was the first institute to that was
devoted to the higher education
of deaf and hard of hearing individuals
the third event took place on march 13th
of 1988 and it’s an event known as deaf president now
on that day gallaudet university students
together with many faculty staff members
alumni and local and national
um members of the deaf community held
protests on campus and marched from
gallaudet university to the capitol
building
and their protest led to the hiring of
the first deaf president of gallaudet university
