John N. Singer, PhD
John N. Singer (PhD, Ohio State University) is Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion and a tenured faculty member in sport management in the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) at Texas A&M University. He is also an original affiliate faculty of the Institute for the Study of Sport, Society, and Social Change at San Jose State University. Dr. Singer’s research centers on diversity and social justice in and thru sport organizations and higher education/academia. He is author of the book, Race, Sports, and Education: Improving Opportunities and Outcomes for Black Male College Athletes (Harvard Education Press, 2019). His work has also appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals, chapters in edited books, and on social media platforms, including the Money-Making Conversations podcast and syndicated radio show with two-time Emmy Award-winning and three-time NAACP Image Award-winning television and film producer, Rushion McDonald. Dr. Singer is a North American Society of Sport Management (NASSM) Research Fellow, and recipient of the NASSM Diversity Award.
As a 2002 graduate and proud alum of the College of Education and Human Ecology, some of Dr. Singer’s notable career highlights related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) work in particular include:
- Inaugural Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion in School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) at Texas A&M University
- Created strategic plan for the Office of Inclusive Excellence (OIE) in SEHD
- Launched Critical Conversations on Diversity Matters Event Series
- Established the Equity and Social Justice Collective to support and unify faculty, staff, and students who do JEDI work
- Money Making Conversations SWAG Award
- Recognizes Black excellence and men whose service and leadership are exemplars of SWAG, representing Strength, Wisdom, Assertiveness, and Genuineness in their spirit.
- North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) Diversity Award
- Recognizes scholarly contributions and service around diversity matters in the field of sport management
- Volunteer Director and Diversity Committee Member, Western Golf Association (WGA)
- Provide thought leadership on strategic diversity planning
- Promote and enhance caddie programs at golf courses
- Engage in fundraising efforts for the Evans Scholars Foundation (ESF)
- Serve as an official at WGA tournaments
- Participate in various ESF functions and events
- Mentor students in Evans Scholar houses across various college and university campuses
- Co-PI on a major research grant with the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA)- Diversity in athletics: An assessment of exemplars and institutional best practices
- Primary role involved leading the qualitative data collection, analysis, interpretation, and write-up of publications
