The Task Force Student Sub-Committee (co-chaired by Penny Pasque and Colette Dollarhide) hosted faculty and students from the College in a discussion about next steps for creating an inclusive and welcoming learning environment in EHE. The ideas they generated are listed below.

We suggest the recommendations moving forward be grounded in each of the departments in EHE, and perhaps the Diversity Committee in each department might be the most appropriate body to implement these recommendations. These are listed in descending order:

Connect students to each other:

  1. Create a physical space that is designated for BIPOC students for community and safety in one or all of the EHE buildings.
  2. Encourage students to create their own student affinity groups

Create ways to connect student with faculty:

  1. MENTORING: Create a BIPOC mentoring system with faculty.
    1. Educate faculty in how to mentor students.
    2. Educate students in how to seek mentoring from faculty.
  2. RESEARCH: Create systems of information about research.
    1. Student listserv for research projects by various faculty (discipline or department specific) (See ORIC website)
    2. Create how-to groups for research, protocol writing, grant writing, manuscript writing, methodologies (See QUALLAB)
    3. Talk about decolonizing research. (Example: QualLab lunches, Unapologetic Research)
    4. How to become a reviewer for a journal.
    5. Reveal the Hidden Curriculum around publication.
    6. Create writing support groups (Example: Quallab Grad Student Board, Dr. McMillian weekly writing time)
    7. “15 week writing project” – Start to finish a manuscript in 15 weeks

Connect students to their future:

  1. Demystifying the tenure process
  2. What can you do with a PhD if you don’t want to become faculty?
  3. Academic job searches – Hidden Rules

Need to survey students each year to find out what they want that year:

  1. Workshops
  2. Writing Alliance
  3. Physical Space
  4. Curriculum decolonization
  5. Each One, Teach One – BIPOC mentoring system for student / student mentoring
