Dr. Carlotta Penn’s book, “The Turtle with an Afro,” teaches Black girls to love the versatility of their hair. On Saturday, she premiered an animated short based on the book at an online event hosted by the Columbus Museum. Dr. Penn was tired of the lack of diversity in children’s books and in TV programming — so she created her own cartoon. This is Dr. Penn’s second children’s book. The first was Dream a Rainbow, that teaches children the colors of the rainbow and inspires them to believe in their dreams. Dr. Penn is Senior Director of Partnerships and Engagement in Office of Equity, Diversity and Global Engagement in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University.
